The Museums of Historic Hopkinsville-Christian County announces two special exhibits on display throughout the month of February at the Pennyroyal Area Museum. In honor of Black History Month, the central display focuses on African American education in Christian County with a special spotlight on the life and contributions of Rozelle Leavell. A Hopkinsville native and graduate of Tuskegee Institute, Leavell (1896-1990) taught in the county’s segregated school system for 42 years, retiring in 1966 when he was the principal of consolidated Gainesville Elementary School. The exhibit features personal items and photographs from Leavell’s educational career, as well as memorabilia from Attucks High School and other local African American schools. In addition, the Pennyroyal Treasures exhibit displays a collection of antique Valentine cards that are sure to inspire a feeling of romance at this
special time of year.
