The Museums of Historic Hopkinsville-Christian County is thrilled to announce that the Pennyroyal Area Museum is getting a makeover!
With up to $1 million provided by the transient room tax put in place by Christian County Fiscal Court, the Museums of Historic Hopkinsville-Christian County is renovating the old Post Office, the home of the Pennyroyal Area Museum since 1976. Built in 1913-15, this elegant, beautiful building is in need of upgrades to provide a space that can best showcase the history that we all treasure. In addition to the building renovation, we will also be refining, redesigning, and creating an updated exhibition to tell the stories of our community.
REB Architects from Nicholasville will be the lead architects on the renovation project. Specializing in historic preservation projects, REB Architects have worked on historic buildings in Hopkinsville, Dawson Springs, and Eddyville in this region and have a long resume of experience with historic structures throughout the state and surrounding area.
Flutter & Wow Museum Projects, based in Ann Arbor, Michigan, will serve as the designer and fabrication specialists for our new exhibition space. Jason Stevens and his team at Flutter & Wow create unique museum exhibits that provide interactive experiences for visitors.
As of Saturday, March 31, 2018, the Pennyroyal Area Museum and the Woody Winfree Fire-Transportation Museum will be closed to the public for preparation and renovation activities. The Woody Winfree Fire-Transportation Museum will be closed to the public beginning in April and will reopen on Tuesday, July 10.
The Museums of Historic Hopkinsville-Christian County intends to stay engaged with the community in a number of ways while the Pennyroyal Area Museum is being revamped. We will continue to host our annual events including a fundraiser at the end of June. We are also adding new public programs to our schedule including our History on Tap series at the Hopkinsville Brewing Company, and we will continue to bring history to you through our website, Facebook, and Instagram pages. We will be working closely with local schools on educational programming, and we will continue our research into the stories and experiences that make Hopkinsville and Christian County the unique and wonderful place that it is.
We anticipate a grand re-opening of the Pennyroyal Area Museum in spring 2019.
