SUMMARY:Tombstone Tuesday
DESCRIPTION:Roll up your sleeves with us to scrub the dirt off a bit of history. Join us on Tuesday\, July 16 at 6pm in Vine Street Cemetery (also known as Union Benevolent Society Cemetery)* for our first Tombstone Tuesday of the summer.  \nLocated on Vine Street just past Wood and Bradshaw streets\, this cemetery was established in 1866 by the Union Benevolent Society\, an organization of newly-freed African Americans just after the conclusion of the Civil War. The group was one of several Black benevolent societies locally and nationally. It served the purpose of financially caring for widows and orphans and for providing a burial place for its members. Commonly referred to as Vine Street Cemetery\, this site is the final resting place of hundreds of local people including dozens of African American veterans of the Civil War. The cemetery ceased to be used as an active burial ground in the mid-20th century and is now owned and maintained by the City of Hopkinsville. \nFolks will receive a brief training on respectful cemetery etiquette and on how to document and clean historic tombstones safely before grabbing a bucket and brush. Learn more about Hopkinsville’s history while making our community a brighter place! \nThis program is free to attend\, and the Museum will provide all supplies – including bug spray. We encourage folks to wear real shoes (not sandals) and pants. \nThis is the fourth year that the Museum has cleaned tombstones as a community outreach program. Our friends at Hoptown Chronicle wrote THIS great article about our first cleaning last year. \nCan’t join us this month? We will clean tombstones on Saturday\, August 10 at 10am and Tuesday\, September 24 at 6pm (weather permitting). Stay tuned for more details and updates.

Nunn Center for Oral History in the University of Kentucky Libraries as we expand our oral history interview collections. If you are interested in recording your story\, please contact Alissa Keller at akeller@museumsofhopkinsville.org. \nFor more information\, give us a call at 270-887-4270.  \nThe Pennyroyal Area Museum is located at 217 East 9th Street and is open Monday through Saturday from 10am until 4pm.

SUMMARY:8th of August Emancipation Day Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate Emancipation Day & Freedom with us!\nThe Museums of Historic Hopkinsville-Christian County and the Hopkinsville Human Rights Commission invite you to celebrate the Eighth of August on Sunday\, August 4\, 2024 from 1:00-4:00pm at the Pennyroyal Area Museum.* This year will be the fourth year that the organizations have partnered to bring this celebration to the community. \nHistorically\, portions of western Kentucky and central Tennessee have centered annual homecomings and celebrations of emancipation around the Eighth of August. Although the origins as to why this date was chosen vary\, festivities have been held around this date since the late 1800s. Community celebrations in the region often included the reading of the Emancipation Proclamation\, a well-known speaker\, a parade\, and baseball games. \nThe afternoon will feature an official proclamation honoring Emancipation Day\, special historic readings\, activities for children\, food trucks\, genealogy information\, and more. SUMMARY:bell hooks Book Club
DESCRIPTION:The bell hooks Legacy Group\, the Museums of Historic Hopkinsville-Christian County\, Hopkinsville Community College\, and the Christian County Literacy Council will celebrate the life and work of Hopkinsville native bell hooks with a book discussion on Wednesday\, September 25 at 6pm in the Anderson Room in the Emerging Technologies Building at Hopkinsville Community College. Light refreshments will be served. \nThis book discussion is the second gathering of the bell hooks Book Club\, an informal group who will come together in conversation of Hopkinsville native bell hooks and her extensive work.  \nBorn Gloria Jean Watkins in Hopkinsville and writing under the pen name bell hooks\, this remarkable woman published 40 books in her lifetime. The cultural critic\, educator\, and theorist is best known for her writings on feminism\, race\, and class\, but she also wrote children’s books and books about love\, spirituality\, and healthy relationships. \nThe group will discuss hooks’s 1996 book Bone Black: Memories of Girlhood. Widely recognized as her memoir of growing up as an African American girl in Hopkinsville\, this book provides an intimate glimpse into the experiences of a young person in the segregated South of the 1950s and ‘60s. The book is presented in short\, powerful vignettes that explore everything from family dynamics and social life to a young woman’s journey to becoming a writer. Gloria Steinem described the book: “With the emotion of poetry\, the narrative of a novel\, and the truth of experience\, bell hooks weaves a girlhood memoir you won’t be able to put down – or forget. Bone Black takes us into the cave of self-creation.  \nHopkinsville Community College is celebrating its 60th Anniversary through June 2025 with the theme 60 Years: A Mosaic of Learning\, Growth\, and Community. Throughout the celebratory year\, HCC will hold events and collaborate with community partners who share the focus of education and growth. “We’re excited to co-sponsor the bell hooks Book Club & 72nd Birthday Celebration along with the Museums of Historic Hopkinsville-Christian County\, the Christian County Literacy Council\, and the bell hooks Legacy Group. The opportunity to share the writing of bell hooks is an ideal way to begin our 60th year\,” stated HCC President Alissa Young. \nStop by The Vault Museum Shop at the Pennyroyal Area Museum to purchase a copy of Bone Black: Memories of Girlhood and to pick up a bell hooks button – while supplies last.  \nThe bell hooks Legacy Group is a grassroots alliance that nurtures the meaning and impact of the writer’s stories\, essays and poems in her hometown\, Hopkinsville\, Kentucky\, where she began life as Gloria Jean Watkins. Follow bellhookslegacygroup on Instagram for more information. \nFor more information\, contact the Museums at 270-887-4270 or visit us in person at the Pennyroyal Area Museum.
