DESCRIPTION:The Museums of Historic Hopkinsville-Christian County invites you to a fun workshop to Make-Your-Own Fascinator on Thursday\, August 28 at 6:30pm at Hopkinsville Brewing Company. In this workshop\, folks can design and build their own masterpieces that can be worn at the Museum’s upcoming gala “Juleps\, Jockeys\, & Jazz” on Saturday\, September 20\, 2025. \nThe workshop is FREE to attend. SUMMARY:History on Tap: The History of the Kentucky Derby in 10 Objects
DESCRIPTION:The Museums of Historic Hopkinsville-Christian County invites you to our next History on Tap  on Thursday\, August 28 at 6:30pm at Hopkinsville Brewing Company for “The History of the Kentucky Derby in 10 Objects\,” an insightful program about the state’s most well-known sports event\, with Jessica Whitehead. \n\nOver the last 150 years\, the Kentucky Derby\, like the state that founded it\, has experienced profound moments of social\, economic\, and cultural change. As one of Kentucky’s flagship cultural and economic institutions\, the Thoroughbred racing industry must constantly reconcile with its past and think critically about the stories that have traditionally made it into the winner’s circle. In the right hands\, artifacts of material culture related to the Derby have the power to inspire nuanced stories of the past and shed light on marginalized voices in the industry’s history. \nIn this program\, Jessica K. Whitehead sets out to recover this accurate history of America’s longest continuously held sporting event and establish a balance between well-known narratives and those that are less widely shared. Whitehead gives readers a personal tour of this history through 10 historic objects from the museum’s permanent collection – including one with special ties to Hopkinsville and Christian County.  \nJessica K. Whitehead is the senior curator of collections for the Kentucky Derby Museum\, where she safeguards and interprets the permanent collection of 20\,000+ objects\, photographs\, and archival materials. On behalf of the museum\, Whitehead has recently published The History of the Kentucky Derby in 75 Objects and Driftwood: The Life of Harlan Hubbard through the University Press of Kentucky. \nHistory on Tap is a free series that seeks to share local history in a relaxed\, fun setting. Programs are typically held on the last Thursday of the month at 6:30pm at Hopkinsville Brewing Company. \n\nFor more information\, follow us on Facebook or give us a call at 270-887-4270.

SUMMARY:Soul Strolls
DESCRIPTION:The Museums of Historic Hopkinsville-Christian County is honoring our community’s ancestors with two Soul Strolls on Saturday\, November 1\, 2025 at 4:30pm and 7pm. Strolls will take place in Riverside Cemetery\, the city’s largest burial ground\, and will include a catered supper for both strolls at 6pm. We will pay our respects by remembering these folks by telling stories of their lives and of their contributions to Hopkinsville and beyond. \nThe walking tour will cover approximately 1 mile and will last approximately 90 minutes. The first tour will begin at 4:30pm with supper to follow at 6pm. The second tour will start with supper at 6pm with the tour to follow at 7pm. Each tour will be limited to 30 people. \nPurchase Tickets\nTickets are $25 per person with a $5 discount available for Museum Members. Check your email for the discount code! SUMMARY:"I Declare" Poetry Workshop with WKMS
DESCRIPTION:The Museums of Historic Hopkinsville-Christian County are partnering with WKMS\, Murray State University’s NPR-affiliate radio station\, to host a poetry workshop inspired by the Declaration of Independence and its 250th anniversary. \nTo commemorate the Declaration’s signing\, participants will be encouraged to share their personal definitions of “Life\, Liberty\, and the pursuit of Happiness\,” highlighting their individual truths through the art of poetry. The workshop will begin with participants introducing themselves – using only six words — by completing the statement\, “I hold this truth to be self-evident…” \nLed by award-winning writer and Murray State alum Constance Alexander\, the poetry workshop will also feature at least two opportunities for free-writing\, based on prompts influenced by the spirit and prose of the Declaration of Independence and its relevance 250 years later. \nThe workshop’s culminating activity will be a group exercise that asks participants to share their personal declarations\, with the option of being recorded for a radio broadcast. A selection of these declarations will be aired regionally on 91.3 WKMS-FM. \nFrom WKMS: \n“Engaging participants with the Declaration of Independence during its 250th anniversary year\, the project deepens public understanding of the Declaration not as a historic artifact\, but as a framework that inspires individuals to examine their lives\, values\, and rights. By sharing original writings through WKMS broadcasts\, online platforms\, open mics\, and community events\, the project creates pathways to conversations about rights\, freedoms\, and responsibilities\, and fosters connections across generations and viewpoints.” \nSAMPLE DECLARATION: \nHear Ye Hear Ye Hear Ye\nI’m declaring my right to be\nRight or wrong good or bad\nTo fill my plate or leave\nThe room a mess or dance\nall night long alone naked or\nNot to share my secret life\nWith anyone or shout out loud\nEverywhere I declare all bonds dissolved\nMy mind my body my own\nMy patience ending with this poem\nBy: Susan Stalick
