DESCRIPTION:We’re telling the story of another strong woman from Hopkinsville this month at History on Tap: Heard It on South Main. Anne Noel takes us on a journey centered on South Main Street and focused on the life of her grandmother. Born in 1905\, Marjorie Barker Lawson led a life that pushed the boundaries of her time. Her story begins and ends in Hopkinsville\, but it takes a number of unexpected twists and turns along the way.  \nNext Month\nJuly’s History on Tap will be on a special day and features a special presentation by Hopkinsville Brewing Company’s own Joey Medeiros. Join us on Thursday\, July 11 at 6:30pm to learn about Joey’s research into the history of beer in Hopkinsville and Christian County and how this history inspired a new beer. \nHistory on Tap is a free series that seeks to share local history in a relaxed\, fun setting. SUMMARY:bell hooks Book Club
DESCRIPTION:The Museums of Historic Hopkinsville-Christian County and the bell hooks Legacy Group introduce the bell hooks Book Club\, an informal group who will come together in conversation of Hopkinsville native bell hooks and her extensive work. The first gathering will be on Monday\, June 17 at 6pm in the bell hooks Community Room at the Pennyroyal Area Museum.  \nBorn Gloria Jean Watkins in Hopkinsville and writing under the pen name bell hooks\, this remarkable woman published 40 books in her lifetime. The cultural critic\, educator\, and theorist is best known for her writings on feminism\, race\, and class\, but she also wrote children’s books and books about love\, spirituality\, and healthy relationships. \nThe group will discuss hooks’s 2002 book Communion: The Female Search for Love. Published as part of her love trilogy\, Communion is described as the “heart-to-heart talk every woman – mother\, daughter\, friend\, and lover – needs to have” about the search for love. The cultural critic and feminist icon explores the ways that ideas about women and love were changed by feminist movements\, by women’s full participation in the workforce\, and by the culture of self-help. This book challenges every woman to claim the search for love as the heroic journey we must all choose to be truly free. \nCopies of Communion are available in The Vault by Planters Bank Museum Shop\, online through our Shopify store\, to check out from the Hopkinsville-Christian County Public Library\, or from Amazon or your favorite bookseller. \nThe bell hooks Legacy Group is a grassroots alliance that nurtures the meaning and impact of the writer’s stories\, essays and poems in her hometown\, Hopkinsville\, Kentucky\, where she began life as Gloria Jean Watkins. DESCRIPTION:All Aboard for the Juneteenth Bus Tour!\nThe Museums of Historic Hopkinsville-Christian County and Visit Hopkinsville are taking our show on the road on a special bus tour of Hopkinsville’s African American history. Join us on Saturday\, June 15 at 1:15pm\, 3:15pm\, or 4:15pm for a tour that follows the African American History Cell Phone Tour. The tour will visit sites primarily on the east side of Hopkinsville. \nThis opportunity is offered in conjunction with the Hopkinsville Juneteenth Celebration. The event will be held at the Boys & Girls Club from 1pm until 6pm and features vendors\, a fashion show\, food trucks\, and more. For more information\, visit Hopkinsville Juneteenth Celebration on Facebook. \nThe bus will load and the tour will begin at the Boys & Girls Club (1600 S. Walnut Street). Tours will be narrated by Gwenda Motley and Alissa Keller\, Museum Director and will last about 45 minutes.  \nThere is no cost to ride\, but each tour is limited to 10 people – first come\, first served.

DESCRIPTION:The Museums of Historic Hopkinsville-Christian County and the Human Rights Commission invite you to join The Supper Club: Inspiring Cultural & Culinary Conversations\, an open group that explores the diversity of our community through food. The club is open to anyone who loves food\, conversation\, and learning about other cultures through commensality.  \nThe Supper Club’s next meeting will be Thursday\, June 13 and will meet at the Pennyroyal Area Museum at 6pm. This month’s program features recipes prepared from cookbooks found in the archives of the Pennyroyal Area Museum. The museum staff is actively culling through recipes to choose interesting dishes that are representative of our community’s heritage. If you have any suggestions or recipes to share\, we’d love to know! \nThey will demonstrate a variety of dishes\, and guests will have the opportunity to taste and experience the cuisine. Guests will take home a recipe and any unique ingredients required to cook the dish at home. \nThe cost to attend this delicious program will be $10.00 per person.  \nDates for upcoming Supper Club gatherings will be August 8\, October 10\, and December 12. All programs will be held at the Pennyroyal Area Museum at 6pm. \nTickets can be purchased at the Pennyroyal Area Museum or online in our Shopify store.  \nThe Supper Club is designed to build community belonging. That gives the community and visitors to our community an extra 11 days to explore the museum and to learn more about local history! Regular hours for the Pennyroyal Area Museum from June 10 through August 31 will be Monday through Saturday from 10am until 4pm. \nMUSEUM MONDAYS AT 10:30AM\nMondays will feature special programming each week at 10:30am at the Pennyroyal Area Museum\, too. Founded in 2019\, Hoptown Chronicle is an online\, nonprofit newsroom dedicated to fact-based reporting in Hopkinsville. In late 2022\, Keller started a column called “Snapshots in Time” to share local history as discovered in photographs and artifacts. Since then\, 30 unique stories have been told through this partnership. \nHistory on Tap is a free series that seeks to share local history in a relaxed\, fun setting. SUMMARY:Downtown Tipsy Tour
DESCRIPTION:Get tipsy with the Museum!\nWe’re going out for a night on the town on Saturday\, May 25 at 5:00pm for our spring Downtown Tipsy Tour\, and we want you to come! \nThis walking tour will start at the Pennyroyal Area Museum and will visit three of Hopkinsville’s downtown establishments as we stroll and drink our way through some of the seedy and scandalous moments of the past. Great for a night out with friends! \nAlcohol is optional (of course)\, but a special adult beverage at each stop (3 total) is included in the ticket price. This program is limited to guests 21 and over. \nThe tour will last about 2 hours\, cover approximately 1-1 ½ miles\, and will end at Hopkinsville Brewing Company on 5th Street in time to enjoy the festivities at the Downtown Block Party. The street will be closed for an evening of food\, dancing\, and fun – including Western KY Silent Disco and food from Vansauwa’s Tacos & Vegan Eats.  \nTickets are $30.00 per person with a 10% discount for Museum Members. Tickets can be purchased at the Pennyroyal Area Museum or online through Shopify.

SUMMARY:Historical Marker Bus Tour
DESCRIPTION:All Aboard for the Historical Marker Bus Tour!\nThe Museums of Historic Hopkinsville-Christian County and Visit Hopkinsville are taking our show on the road on a special bus tour of Christian County’s Historical Markers. Join us on Saturday\, May 25 at 10am for a county-wide riding tour to visit our state historical markers. \nSince 1949\, the Kentucky Historical Society has partnered with communities across the commonwealth to install more than 2\,400 historical markers that share our state’s complex and remarkable history. Of those 2\,400 markers\, twenty-two are located in Christian County – with two more approved for installation. The earliest was dedicated here in 1964; the most recent in 2020. These markers tell stories of notable people\, places\, and events that have shaped our community\, our state\, and our country. \nThe bus will load and the tour will begin at the Visitors Center (1730 E. 9th Street). The tour will be narrated by Alissa Keller\, Museum Director\, will last about 2 hours\, and will include one comfort stop at the Pennyroyal Area Museum.  \nCost to ride is $15.00 per person. Tickets can be purchased online through Shopify or in-person at the Visitors Center or at the Pennyroyal Area Museum. The tour is limited to 12 people. \nThis bus tour is SOLD OUT. We hope to do more tours soon!

SUMMARY:Tombstone Tuesday
DESCRIPTION:Roll up your sleeves with us to scrub the dirt off a bit of history. Join us on Tuesday\, May 21 at 6pm in Vine Street Cemetery (also known as Union Benevolent Society Cemetery)* for our first Tombstone Tuesday of the summer.  \nLocated on Vine Street just past Wood and Bradshaw streets\, this cemetery was established in 1866 by the Union Benevolent Society\, an organization of newly-freed African Americans just after the conclusion of the Civil War. The group was one of several Black benevolent societies locally and nationally. It served the purpose of financially caring for widows and orphans and for providing a burial place for its members. Commonly referred to as Vine Street Cemetery\, this site is the final resting place of hundreds of local people including dozens of African American veterans of the Civil War. The cemetery ceased to be used as an active burial ground in the mid-20th century and is now owned and maintained by the City of Hopkinsville. \nFolks will receive a brief training on respectful cemetery etiquette and on how to document and clean historic tombstones safely before grabbing a bucket and brush. Learn more about Hopkinsville’s history while making our community a brighter place! \nThis program is free to attend\, and the Museum will provide all supplies – including bug spray. We encourage folks to wear real shoes (not sandals) and pants. \nThis is the fourth year that the Museum has cleaned tombstones as a community outreach program. Our friends at Hoptown Chronicle wrote THIS great article about our first cleaning last year. \nCan’t join us this month? We will clean tombstones on Tuesday\, July 16 and Tuesday\,  September 24 at 6pm and Saturday\, August 10 at 10am (weather permitting). Stay tuned for more details and updates.

This month’s program features Roger Alleyne and Desaepa and Zirconia Vansauwa of Vansauwa’s Tacos & Vegan Eats. The couple’s food truck grew out of Desaepa’s desire to make jerk chicken up to the standard’s of Roger\, Zirconia’s father. Roger’s Barbadian roots shine through the cuisine that has made Vansauwa’s Tacos & Vegan Eats a community favorite. \nThey will demonstrate a variety of dishes\, and guests will have the opportunity to taste and experience the cuisine. Guests will take home a recipe and any unique ingredients required to cook the dish at home. \nThe cost to attend this delicious program will be $10.00 per person or you can purchase a season pass to attend all remaining programs for $50.00.  \nDates for upcoming Supper Club gatherings will be June 13\, August 8\, October 10\, and December 12. DESCRIPTION:The sky goes *partially* dark again!\nThe Museums of Historic Hopkinsville-Christian County\, Visit Hopkinsville\, and Hopkinsville Parks & Recreation is hosting a Watch Party for the Solar Eclipse on Monday\, April 8\, 2024. The community is invited to gather at the Hopkinsville Visitor’s Center from 12pm until 4pm for fun activities and to view the eclipse with friends. \nHopkinsville falls just outside the path of totality\, but we will still experience a partial eclipse. That means that the moon will block out most – but not all – of the sun for a period of time. The partial eclipse will begin before 1pm\, will be at its greatest at 2:03pm\, and will conclude just after 3pm. Eclipse glasses should be worn at all times if outside and looking at the sun. Eclipse glasses are available for purchase at the Visitors Center for $1.00 (while supplies last). \nThe watch party will also be a time to commemorate and remember Christian County’s place as the Point of Greatest Eclipse for the Great American Eclipse on August 21\, 2017. Food trucks\, crafts\, snacks\, games\, music\, and a simple sense of community are on the agenda for the afternoon! Drop in for a bit or stay the whole time.  \nThe watch party will be held at the Hopkinsville Visitors Center located at 1730 East 9th Street. People have lived in the Pennyroyal Region for thousands and thousands of years\, but what was it like to move here from the east coast right after the American Revolution? Kids will use their reasoning skills to determine what kinds of things they can pack in a covered wagon to travel the trail west to Kentucky – and they will get to see real artifacts from the time period from our Pioneers and Settlers exhibit.  \nNo registration is necessary. Kids will learn about different kinds of rocks\, how they’re formed\, which ones are found in our region\, and why rocks are so important to our lives. A fun activity gives kids a chance to match rocks as they learn to distinguish between stones\, fossils\, and crystals. Kids get to experience this activity in the heart of our Pennyroyal Plateau exhibit where they can learn even more about local rocks\, plants\, animals\, and even dirt. Our little paleontologists will even get to take home their own bag of precious stones! \nNo registration is necessary. SUMMARY:History on Tap: Christian County's Wealthiest Woman
DESCRIPTION:We are honoring Women’s History Month at History on Tap with a special program about a fascinating local woman. \nIn 1896 following the death of her mother\, seven-year-old Louise Jones became one of the wealthiest people in Christian County. Her father Lucian Jones\, the first president of the City Bank of Hopkinsville\, had already passed away –  before his little daughter’s second birthday. As the family’s sole heir\, the young orphan inherited a great estate and led a fascinating life. Museum Director Alissa Keller will explore the story of this local woman in all of its beauty and tragedy. \nKeller joins us again to present in April on yet another fascinating local personality and his connection to an international diamond hoax in the late 19th century. \nHistory on Tap is a free series that seeks to share local history in a relaxed\, fun setting. DESCRIPTION:The City of Hopkinsville and the bell hooks Legacy Group will host a dedication ceremony for bell hooks Way — formerly Eighth Street between South Virginia and Clay streets — at 1:30 p.m. Friday\, March 1. The public is invited to gather at Eighth and Liberty streets for the unveiling of a new street sign and acknowledgments of bell hooks’ legacy in Hopkinsville and beyond. \nFollowing the street dedication\, attendees are invited to the Pennyroyal Area Museum\, 217 E. Ninth St.\, for the opening of the newly created bell hooks Legacy Room. \nTogether\, these two events will mark bell hooks Legacy Day to honor the memory of a great American writer\, educator and cultural critic who hailed from Hopkinsville. Born as Gloria Jean Watkins on Sept. 25\, 1952\, she adopted the pen name bell hooks from her great-grandmother and earned international acclaim for her writings on feminism\, race and class. She passed away on Dec. 15\, 2021\, at her home in Berea. \nHopkinsville City Council agreed to rename the street for bell hooks at the request of her sister\, Gwenda Motley\, and other advocates who seek to illuminate the writer’s impact in her hometown. \n“The family is very excited to have a street named on her behalf and a community room named in her honor\,” said Motley. \nThe selection of Eighth Street is significant because it is adjacent to the Carnegie Library\, which was the main public library in Hopkinsville when Gloria Watkins was a child. There she gained access to hundreds of books that helped cultivate her intellectual development. \nThe bell hooks Legacy Group is a grassroots alliance that nurtures the meaning and impact of the writer’s stories\, essays and poems in her hometown\, Hopkinsville\, Kentucky\, where she began life as Gloria Jean Watkins.

DESCRIPTION:We are honoring Black History Month at History on Tap with a special program on “Slavery Survivors.” \nChristian County has a rich\, dark history of slavery from its earliest days. In the Kentucky New Era in 1934\, local journalist Charles Meacham published short biographies of 25 local African Americans who had lived as enslaved people in this area. These biographies provide a glimpse into a part of our past that is not well documented and give us a chance to better understand the depth and breadth of our community’s history. \nCurrent and former members of the Museum’s and Hopkinsville History Foundation’s Board of Directors will share the stories of these people who lived through so much. \nHistory on Tap is a free series that seeks to share local history in a relaxed\, fun setting.
