SUMMARY:The Full Scoop! Music\, News\, & Memories
DESCRIPTION:The Museums of Historic Hopkinsville-Christian County is hosting a PARTY this Thursday\, August 15 from 6pm-8pm at the Pennyroyal Area Museum. “The Full Scoop! – Music\, News\, & Memories” celebrates the readers of Hoptown Chronicle and the listeners of WKMS in a place where their stories are on display. \nWKMS is the public radio station at Murray State University. The two news outlets have a content sharing agreement that allows them to run each other’s stories – and so many of these stories focus on the history and people of this region.  \nLive music will be provided by Little by Little\, winner of the 2024 WKMS Battle of the Bands competition. They will be set up in the main McCarroll Gallery in the Pennyroyal Area Museum. We will serve ice cream\, and folks will get to explore the museum to see how closely connected our exhibit and the work done by Hoptown Chronicle and WKMS truly are.  \nFor more information\, check out this Letter from the Editor in Hoptown Chronicle\, or give us a call at the Museum at 270-887-4270. \nStop by to get the scoop – and to enjoy a scoop of ice cream! \n

SUMMARY:bell hooks Book Club
DESCRIPTION:The bell hooks Legacy Group\, the Museums of Historic Hopkinsville-Christian County\, Hopkinsville Community College\, and the Christian County Literacy Council will celebrate the life and work of Hopkinsville native bell hooks with a book discussion on Wednesday\, September 25 at 6pm in the Anderson Room in the Emerging Technologies Building at Hopkinsville Community College. Light refreshments will be served. \nThis book discussion is the second gathering of the bell hooks Book Club\, an informal group who will come together in conversation of Hopkinsville native bell hooks and her extensive work.  \nBorn Gloria Jean Watkins in Hopkinsville and writing under the pen name bell hooks\, this remarkable woman published 40 books in her lifetime. The cultural critic\, educator\, and theorist is best known for her writings on feminism\, race\, and class\, but she also wrote children’s books and books about love\, spirituality\, and healthy relationships. \nThe group will discuss hooks’s 1996 book Bone Black: Memories of Girlhood. Widely recognized as her memoir of growing up as an African American girl in Hopkinsville\, this book provides an intimate glimpse into the experiences of a young person in the segregated South of the 1950s and ‘60s. The book is presented in short\, powerful vignettes that explore everything from family dynamics and social life to a young woman’s journey to becoming a writer. Gloria Steinem described the book: “With the emotion of poetry\, the narrative of a novel\, and the truth of experience\, bell hooks weaves a girlhood memoir you won’t be able to put down – or forget. Bone Black takes us into the cave of self-creation.  \nHopkinsville Community College is celebrating its 60th Anniversary through June 2025 with the theme 60 Years: A Mosaic of Learning\, Growth\, and Community. Throughout the celebratory year\, HCC will hold events and collaborate with community partners who share the focus of education and growth. “We’re excited to co-sponsor the bell hooks Book Club & 72nd Birthday Celebration along with the Museums of Historic Hopkinsville-Christian County\, the Christian County Literacy Council\, and the bell hooks Legacy Group. The opportunity to share the writing of bell hooks is an ideal way to begin our 60th year\,” stated HCC President Alissa Young. \nStop by The Vault Museum Shop at the Pennyroyal Area Museum to purchase a copy of Bone Black: Memories of Girlhood and to pick up a bell hooks button – while supplies last.  \nThe bell hooks Legacy Group is a grassroots alliance that nurtures the meaning and impact of the writer’s stories\, essays and poems in her hometown\, Hopkinsville\, Kentucky\, where she began life as Gloria Jean Watkins. Follow bellhookslegacygroup on Instagram for more information. \nFor more information\, contact the Museums at 270-887-4270 or visit us in person at the Pennyroyal Area Museum.

SUMMARY:Saturday Sleuths: Hibernation Heist
DESCRIPTION:Museum to host new monthly Saturday program for children:  Saturday Sleuths \nThe Museums of Hopkinsville-Christian County is excited to announce its newest educational program: Saturday Sleuths! Designed for children ages 6-12\, Saturday Sleuths will invite students to become detectives and help solve a history mystery at the museum on the last Saturday of every month. \nThe first Saturday Sleuths mystery\, “The Hibernation Heist\,” will take place on Saturday\, January 25th\, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Pennyroyal Area Museum.
