SUMMARY:Museum After Dark: Pit Tournament
DESCRIPTION:New “Museum After Dark” Program! \nThe Museums of Hopkinsville-Christian County is offering special “Museum After Dark” programs outside of normal operating hours. \nOn Tuesday\, March 18\, in celebration of Edgar Cayce’s birthday\, the Museums of Hopkinsville-Christian County will be offering a special “Museum After Dark” program featuring a game that Mr. Cacye invented – the game of Pit. \nFirst sold in 1904\, Pit allows players to imitate the commodities agricultural traders of the Chicago Board of Trade that was known as “The Pit.” Mr. Cayce invented the card game while he was living in Bowling Green\, Kentucky\, as a fun and educational way to teach those playing about how stock markets work. The game went national after being picked up by the Parker Brothers game company\, although Mr. Cayce only received a dozen or so decks of the cards produced by the company – and $6.00. \nExciting and fast-paced\, Pit players trade commodities like corn\, soybeans\, wheat\, and more in free-for-all style rounds. Once one player collects all of any given commodity\, they “corner the market” and end the round. Points are given for commodities collected.   \nEnjoy a little friendly competition at the Museum – and celebrate Edgar Cayce’s birthday – on Tuesday\, March 18 at 6 p.m. Pit is an individual competition game\, so no teams are necessary!  \nThe program will be held at the Pennyroyal Area Museum on Tuesday\, March 18 at 6 p.m. Regular admission rates apply\, but museum members are free to attend. \nIf you have any questions\, please contact the Museum at (270) 887-4270 or email our Learning Coordinator: brett@museumsofhopkinsville.org.

SUMMARY:Saturday Sleuths: The Border State Burglary
DESCRIPTION:The Museums of Hopkinsville-Christian County is excited to announce the next installment of the new Saturday Sleuths program on April 26 from 10:30am-11:30am. Designed for children ages 6-12\, Saturday Sleuths will invite students to become detectives and help solve a history mystery at the museum on the last Saturday of every month. \nApril’s program is entitled “The Border State Burglary.” From 1861 to 1865\, the United States experienced a tragic civil war where northern and southern states fought each other. Many southern states separated from the U.S. to form the Confederate States\, but Kentucky stayed a part of the Union as a border state. Christian County was often invaded by both sides\, and the city of Hopkinsville was traded back and forth between the Union and the Confederacy throughout the war. \nThis month we’ll be investigating events that occurred during this time as we try to get to the bottom of a Civil War mystery while learning map skills. \nThe program will be held at the Pennyroyal Area Museum. The cost of the program is $3\, but Museum Members will be given free admission. \nIf you have any questions\, please contact the Museum at (270) 887-4270 or email our Learning Coordinator: brett@museumsofhopkinsville.org.

SUMMARY:Tombstone Tuesday
DESCRIPTION:Roll up your sleeves with us to scrub the dirt off a bit of history. Join us on Tuesday\, May 27 at 6pm in Vine Street Cemetery (also known as Union Benevolent Society Cemetery)* for our FIRST Tombstone Tuesday of the season.  \nLocated on Vine Street just past Wood and Bradshaw streets\, this cemetery was established in 1866 by the Union Benevolent Society\, an organization of newly-freed African Americans just after the conclusion of the Civil War. The group was one of several Black benevolent societies locally and nationally. It served the purpose of financially caring for widows and orphans and for providing a burial place for its members. Commonly referred to as Vine Street Cemetery\, this site is the final resting place of hundreds of local people including dozens of African American veterans of the Civil War. The cemetery ceased to be used as an active burial ground in the mid-20th century and is now owned and maintained by the City of Hopkinsville. \nFolks will receive a brief training on respectful cemetery etiquette and on how to document and clean historic tombstones safely before grabbing a bucket and brush. Learn more about Hopkinsville’s history while making our community a brighter place! \nThis program is free to attend\, and the Museum will provide all supplies – including bug spray. We encourage folks to wear real shoes (not sandals) and pants. \nThis is the fourth year that the Museum has cleaned tombstones as a community outreach program. Our friends at Hoptown Chronicle wrote THIS great article about our first cleaning last year. \nWe expect to finish all of the stones in the Union Benevolent Cemetery this year. Stay tuned for where we plan to clean next summer!

SUMMARY:History on Tap: Alcohol and the Kentucky Shakers
DESCRIPTION:The Museums of Historic Hopkinsville-Christian County invites you to our next History on Tap  on Thursday\, June 26 at 6:30pm at Hopkinsville Brewing Company for “Making Use Ardent Spirits: Alcohol and the Kentucky Shakers” with Tommy Hines. \n\nFrom 1807 through 1922\, a religious sect known as the Shakers occupied a 6\,000-acre farm in nearby Logan County. Naming their village South Union\, the Shakers practiced a communal lifestyle based on withdrawal from the “world” and with an emphasis on simplicity and perfection in all things. Their lifestyle also included the production of “ardent spirits” for both sale and consumption. South Union made whiskey in a stillhouse as early as the 1820s. Join Tommy Hines\, Director of South Union Shaker Village and member of the Kentucky Humanities Council’s Speakers Bureau\, as he explores the history of our Shaker neighbors and shares about their newly-released Shakertown Spirits bourbon. \n\nHistory on Tap is a free series that seeks to share local history in a relaxed\, fun setting. Programs are typically held on the last Thursday of the month at 6:30pm at Hopkinsville Brewing Company. \nFor more information\, follow us on Facebook or give us a call at 270-887-4270.

SUMMARY:Saturday Sleuths: The Circus Catastrophe
DESCRIPTION:The Museums of Hopkinsville-Christian County is excited to announce the next installment of the new Saturday Sleuths program on June 28 from 10:30am-11:30am. Designed for children ages 6-12\, Saturday Sleuths will invite students to become detectives and help solve a history mystery at the museum on the last Saturday of every month. \nStep right up to help us solve the mystery of “The Circus Catastrophe” at the Museum’s next Saturday Sleuths program.  Just days away from opening night\, the Pennyroyal Circus is having a lot of issues!  Missing items\, equipment failure\, and a mysterious injury to the Ring Master are threatening to shut the show down before it even gets started.  Help us figure out who or what is behind all the problems before the circus owner decides to cancel the circus and leave town!
