SUMMARY:History on Tap: Alcohol and the Kentucky Shakers
DESCRIPTION:The Museums of Historic Hopkinsville-Christian County invites you to our next History on Tap  on Thursday\, June 26 at 6:30pm at Hopkinsville Brewing Company for “Making Use Ardent Spirits: Alcohol and the Kentucky Shakers” with Tommy Hines. \n\nFrom 1807 through 1922\, a religious sect known as the Shakers occupied a 6\,000-acre farm in nearby Logan County. Naming their village South Union\, the Shakers practiced a communal lifestyle based on withdrawal from the “world” and with an emphasis on simplicity and perfection in all things. Their lifestyle also included the production of “ardent spirits” for both sale and consumption. South Union made whiskey in a stillhouse as early as the 1820s. Join Tommy Hines\, Director of South Union Shaker Village and member of the Kentucky Humanities Council’s Speakers Bureau\, as he explores the history of our Shaker neighbors and shares about their newly-released Shakertown Spirits bourbon. \n\nHistory on Tap is a free series that seeks to share local history in a relaxed\, fun setting. Programs are typically held on the last Thursday of the month at 6:30pm at Hopkinsville Brewing Company. \nFor more information\, follow us on Facebook or give us a call at 270-887-4270.

SUMMARY:Tombstone Tuesday
DESCRIPTION:Roll up your sleeves with us to scrub the dirt off a bit of history. Join us on Tuesday\, July 29 at 6pm in Vine Street Cemetery (also known as Union Benevolent Society Cemetery)* for our second Tombstone Tuesday of the season.  \nLocated on Vine Street just past Wood and Bradshaw streets\, this cemetery was established in 1866 by the Union Benevolent Society\, an organization of newly-freed African Americans just after the conclusion of the Civil War. The group was one of several Black benevolent societies locally and nationally. It served the purpose of financially caring for widows and orphans and for providing a burial place for its members. Commonly referred to as Vine Street Cemetery\, this site is the final resting place of hundreds of local people including dozens of African American veterans of the Civil War. The cemetery ceased to be used as an active burial ground in the mid-20th century and is now owned and maintained by the City of Hopkinsville. \nFolks will receive a brief training on respectful cemetery etiquette and on how to document and clean historic tombstones safely before grabbing a bucket and brush. Learn more about Hopkinsville’s history while making our community a brighter place! \nThis program is free to attend\, and the Museum will provide all supplies – including bug spray. We encourage folks to wear real shoes (not sandals) and pants. \nThis is the fourth year that the Museum has cleaned tombstones as a community outreach program. Our friends at Hoptown Chronicle wrote THIS great article about our first cleaning last year. \nWe expect to finish all of the stones in the Union Benevolent Cemetery this year. Stay tuned for where we plan to clean next summer!

SUMMARY:Saturday Sleuths: Alien Art Invasion
DESCRIPTION:The Museums of Hopkinsville-Christian County is excited to announce the next installment of our Saturday Sleuths program on August 23 from 10:30am-11:30am. Designed for children ages 6-12\, Saturday Sleuths will invite students to become detectives and help solve a history mystery at the museum on the last Saturday of every month. In August\, the date was moved up one week in order to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the encounter of “strange visitors” in Kelly\, Kentucky\, on August 21\, 1955. \nBe sure to stop by the Museum for an out-of-this-world experience!  Aliens abound throughout the exhibit\, and you’ll have a chance to capture them in your own artistic ways. The cost of the program is $3\, but Museum Members will be given free admission. \nIf you have any questions\, please contact the Museum at (270) 887-4270 or email our Learning Coordinator: brett@museumsofhopkinsville.org.

SUMMARY:History on Tap: The History of the Kentucky Derby in 10 Objects
DESCRIPTION:The Museums of Historic Hopkinsville-Christian County invites you to our next History on Tap  on Thursday\, August 28 at 6:30pm at Hopkinsville Brewing Company for “The History of the Kentucky Derby in 10 Objects\,” an insightful program about the state’s most well-known sports event\, with Jessica Whitehead. \n\nOver the last 150 years\, the Kentucky Derby\, like the state that founded it\, has experienced profound moments of social\, economic\, and cultural change. As one of Kentucky’s flagship cultural and economic institutions\, the Thoroughbred racing industry must constantly reconcile with its past and think critically about the stories that have traditionally made it into the winner’s circle. In the right hands\, artifacts of material culture related to the Derby have the power to inspire nuanced stories of the past and shed light on marginalized voices in the industry’s history. \nIn this program\, Jessica K. Whitehead sets out to recover this accurate history of America’s longest continuously held sporting event and establish a balance between well-known narratives and those that are less widely shared. Whitehead gives readers a personal tour of this history through 10 historic objects from the museum’s permanent collection – including one with special ties to Hopkinsville and Christian County.  \nJessica K. Whitehead is the senior curator of collections for the Kentucky Derby Museum\, where she safeguards and interprets the permanent collection of 20\,000+ objects\, photographs\, and archival materials. On behalf of the museum\, Whitehead has recently published The History of the Kentucky Derby in 75 Objects and Driftwood: The Life of Harlan Hubbard through the University Press of Kentucky. \nHistory on Tap is a free series that seeks to share local history in a relaxed\, fun setting. Programs are typically held on the last Thursday of the month at 6:30pm at Hopkinsville Brewing Company. \n\nFor more information\, follow us on Facebook or give us a call at 270-887-4270.
