SUMMARY:bell hooks Book Club
DESCRIPTION:The bell hooks Legacy Group\, the Museums of Historic Hopkinsville-Christian County\, Hoptown Chronicle\, and the Christian County Literacy Council will celebrate the life and work of Hopkinsville native bell hooks with a book discussion on Monday\, February 24 at 6pm in the bell hooks Legacy Room at the Pennyroyal Area Museum. \nThe bell hooks Book Club is an informal group who will come together in conversation of Hopkinsville native bell hooks and her extensive work. All are welcome to join the discussion. \nBorn Gloria Jean Watkins in Hopkinsville and writing under the pen name bell hooks\, this remarkable woman published 40 books in her lifetime. The cultural critic\, educator\, and theorist is best known for her writings on feminism\, race\, and class\, but she also wrote children’s books and books about love\, spirituality\, and healthy relationships. \nAfter our meeting in February\, it was decided that the group would meet more frequently to discuss shorter readings in greater depth. Next week’s meeting will discuss the Introduction and Chapter One: “The Heart of the Matter” of hooks’s 2001 book Salvation: Black People and Love. \nPublished as part of her love trilogy\, Salvation “examines everything from love in significant works of black literature to popular television shows to rap music\, and how these portrayals of love have affected and represented the black community. She also discusses love and how it has affected black figures throughout history\, from the days of slavery to the civil rights and Black Power movements up to today. This book is an incredibly influential and meaningful work of healing among races\, using the truly universal experience of love to bring us together.” (from bellhooksbooks.com) \nStop by The Vault Museum Shop at the Pennyroyal Area Museum to purchase a copy of Salvation: Black People and Love and to pick up a bell hooks button – while supplies last.  \nThe bell hooks Legacy Group is a grassroots alliance that nurtures the meaning and impact of the writer’s stories\, essays and poems in her hometown\, Hopkinsville\, Kentucky\, where she began life as Gloria Jean Watkins. Follow bellhookslegacygroup on Instagram for more information. \nFor more information\, contact the Museums at 270-887-4270 or visit us in person at the Pennyroyal Area Museum.

SUMMARY:Museum After Dark: Pit Tournament
DESCRIPTION:New “Museum After Dark” Program! \nThe Museums of Hopkinsville-Christian County is offering special “Museum After Dark” programs outside of normal operating hours. \nOn Tuesday\, March 18\, in celebration of Edgar Cayce’s birthday\, the Museums of Hopkinsville-Christian County will be offering a special “Museum After Dark” program featuring a game that Mr. Cacye invented – the game of Pit. \nFirst sold in 1904\, Pit allows players to imitate the commodities agricultural traders of the Chicago Board of Trade that was known as “The Pit.” Mr. Cayce invented the card game while he was living in Bowling Green\, Kentucky\, as a fun and educational way to teach those playing about how stock markets work. The game went national after being picked up by the Parker Brothers game company\, although Mr. Cayce only received a dozen or so decks of the cards produced by the company – and $6.00. \nExciting and fast-paced\, Pit players trade commodities like corn\, soybeans\, wheat\, and more in free-for-all style rounds. Once one player collects all of any given commodity\, they “corner the market” and end the round. Points are given for commodities collected.   \nEnjoy a little friendly competition at the Museum – and celebrate Edgar Cayce’s birthday – on Tuesday\, March 18 at 6 p.m. Pit is an individual competition game\, so no teams are necessary!  \nThe program will be held at the Pennyroyal Area Museum on Tuesday\, March 18 at 6 p.m. Regular admission rates apply\, but museum members are free to attend. \nIf you have any questions\, please contact the Museum at (270) 887-4270 or email our Learning Coordinator: brett@museumsofhopkinsville.org.
