Pioneers & Settlers

English explorers, long hunters, and merchants came into Kentucky from the original 13 American colonies when they learned about the Cumberland Gap — the easiest route through the Appalachian Mountains, about 250 miles east of here. Daniel Boone famously led 30 of Kentucky’s first European settlers and enslaved Africans through the Cumberland Gap in 1775, just one month before the start of the American Revolutionary War.
